I’m Not Kicking the Bucket Bucket List – The Ultimate

It’s like loving outer space and being chosen to fly in a rocket ship to Mars.

It’s like being a hiker and reaching the top of Mount Everest.

It’s like winning the Super Bowl – not as a fan, AS THE QUARTERBACK!

That’s what it’s like to play Pine Valley, arguably the world’s #1 golf course.  It’s the ultimate in design, the ultimate in beauty, the ultimate in challenge.  And the ultimate in how impossible it is to get to play.

So how does a low-falutin golfer like me get to play Pine Valley?  At the risk of sounding like I’m blowing smoke up anyone’s…uh, well, you know where, I met two of the greatest guys.   I met David first – at a fundraiser, philanthropy is good!  He took me to play his home course and he invited his friend Andrew to join us.

Andrew is the type of person everyone likes immediately.  He just has that certain je ne sais quoi.  I wish I had it.  I’m afraid I may have je ne sais blah.

I say this because I want to be really clear, I would have liked Andrew if he was a member of Cow Pasture Municipal Golf Course.  But, when he told me he was a member of Pine Valley, my heart darn-near skipped a beat.

He invited me to play shortly thereafter.  Waiting for the day was excrutiating!  “Only 10 more days to go”…  “Only 9 more days to go.”  But finally the day arrived and it was more phenomenal than I had even dreamed.  Every single hole was glorious – tree-lined, beautifully manicured, and, well, just breathtakingly beautiful.

It was literally one of the best days of my life.  And I use the word literally, literally.  I walked into my house after the round and said to Rebecca, “Being married to you is the best thing in my life, but as far as single days go, our wedding day just got knocked down to second.”

How well do you know musicals? 101, pounds of fun, that’s my little honey bun! Not pretty. The photo is from an up and down I made for a rare par.

I said pretty much the same thing to my wife….. “Playing Marine Park just knocked our wedding day down to the 275th best day of my life”….. and then she clocked me one.

Guess how many courses I have played.

#1 golf course in the world, and it’s in Joisy! #1 golf course in the world, and nobody’s ever heard of it! I heard they hold a prestigious amateur tourney there, and the public can attend. That’s my only hope. That, or give Andrew my # 🙂

Trying to see what shoes you wore for this momentous round. They look RED. Given your shoe collection, I am curious about which ones get selected when? Is there a pair solely for bucket list courses? (No pun intended 🙂

Funny you should ask. I wore a really frumpy pair… what a dork I can be! I wanted to wear something comfortable because I know the course is hilly, but duh. Then for the entire round, every time I looked down at the ball and saw the frumpy shoes, I reprimanded myself…. PATTY, YOU OWN ALMOST 40 PAIR OF SHOES… YOU WORE THESE TO PINE VALLEY???
